Thiruppavai is a revered Tamil devotional hymn composed by the saint-poetess Andal (also known as Goda Devi) in the 8th century. Andal is one of the twelve Alwars, the prominent saints known for their passionate devotion to Lord Vishnu.
Thiruppavai consists of 30 verses, is said to be the seed of vedas, each a lyrical expression of devotion to Lord Vishnu, particularly in his form as Krishna. Andal composed these pasurams during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January), and they are traditionally recited during this month. The pasurans are chanted every day in the context of the Paavai Nonbu (vow), a traditional practice observed by unmarried girls seeking to marry virtuous husbands. Andal and her companions (gopis) undertake this vow to attain the divine companionship of Lord Krishna.
