Bramma - The Creator?
Brahma, the Creator, is one of the principal deities in the Hindu Trimurti (Trinity), alongside Vishnu (the Preserver) and Shiva (the Destroyer). He is regarded as the manifest aspect of the ultimate reality (Brahman) responsible for the creation of the universe.
According to the Puranas, Brahma emerges from the navel of Lord Vishnu, seated on a lotus, symbolizing the unfolding of the cosmos. While he is often depicted with four heads, representing the four Vedas and the four directions, Advaita Vedanta sees Brahma as a personification of cosmic creation rather than the ultimate reality itself. In the non-dualistic view, Brahman (the infinite consciousness) is beyond all forms, including Brahma as a deity.
Brahma's role in creation is intricately linked to Maya (illusion). According to Advaita, creation is not an absolute reality but a projection of Brahman through Maya, just as dreams appear real to the dreamer but dissolve upon awakening. Brahma, as the Creator, is the aspect of Brahman that brings forth names, forms, and experiences within the cosmic play, yet he himself is ultimately governed by time and dissolution. This explains why Brahma is not worshipped as widely as Vishnu or Shiva—because in Advaita, the goal is not to be trapped within creation but to transcend it and realize the formless, eternal Brahman.
The lifespan of Brahma is said to be 100 Brahma years, equating to 311.04 trillion human years, after which the universe dissolves into the infinite Brahman, only to be recreated again in an eternal cycle. However, from the Advaitic standpoint, this cycle itself is an illusion (Mithya)—there is no real creation, sustenance, or destruction, as everything is only a superimposition on the non-dual Brahman. Just as waves arise and fall in the ocean, yet the ocean itself remains unchanged, the universe appears and dissolves within Brahman, which alone is unchanging, eternal, and absolute.
Thus, while Brahma symbolizes the creative power within the universe, the true Self (Atman) is beyond even Brahma, beyond creation and destruction. The goal of Vedanta is not to seek Brahma’s world (Brahmaloka) but to awaken to the realization that we were never separate from Brahman to begin with. In this sense, Brahma is a doorway to understanding the illusion of duality, and the journey beyond him leads to the ultimate truth—non-dual existence, pure awareness, and infinite bliss.
